Early Life and Influences
John Dewey, born in 1859 in Burlington, Vermont, was the son of a general store owner. His early education was influenced by the progressive ideas of the time, including those of Horace Mann and the kindergarten movement. After graduating from the University of Vermont in 1879, Dewey pursued graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he studied philosophy under G. Stanley Hall.
Career and Educational Philosophy
Dewey began his teaching career in 1884 at the University of Michigan. He later taught at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. Dewey's educational philosophy emphasized the importance of hands-on learning, critical thinking, and social engagement. He believed that education should be a lifelong process that fosters personal growth and social responsibility.
